This is a residential drawing and painting weekend in one of the most historic and beautiful arts centres in Scotland. You will follow a distinguished line of Scottish contemporary and 20th century artists who have spent productive summers here as students or have completed residencies using the house, its grounds and collections as their inspiration. Some artists of wide ranging styles, have gone on to fuller appreciation, such as Joan Eardley, Will MacLean, Peter Howson and Calum Innes.
The weekend will start with our arrival on Friday evening getting to know the house and grounds. The inspiration for the weekend will be our surroundings, exploration by drawing, and working towards a more personal interpretation of your chosen area of interest by the end of Sunday. As we receive top quality catering on site during our stay and the studio is available to us, you will be able to concentrate fully on your artistic practice. There will be discussion of themes, suggested starting off points, reference to artists who have worked here and many ideas to support you through the weekend. Once Hospitalfield has woven its magic round you, you will find you have ended up with a collection of work, which will lead you on to other ideas, and hopefully leave you with a feeling of having made friends with like minded people and a strong desire to return.
This weekend runs with a minimum of 12 participants. Arbroath is on the main East Coast railway line, lifts from the bus or train station can be arranged.
